If you see this, you’re in the wrong place

I’ve moved my blog to deborahbeatty.wordpress.com. Sorry for the inconvenience.

A Rose By Any Other Name…

I stumbled upon this as I was cruising along. Since I focus a lot of my efforts on Mompreneurs, thought you might enjoy this the way I did. I’m not sure who wrote it originally, but I sure would like to find out.

Not “Just a Mom” By Author Unknown

A woman named Emily renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. “What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a… “Of course I have a job,” snapped Emily. “I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, “Official Interrogator” or “Town Registrar.” “What is your occupation?” she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know… The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in your field?”

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn’t), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I’m working for my Masters, (the whole darned family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants - ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than “just another mother.” Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers “Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations” and great grandmothers “Executive Senior Research Associates”? I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts “Associate Research Assistants”. No matter what it is you do, never under-sell or underestimate yourself.

Enjoy your day, your week and your lives.

Work well, play well, be well,

The Joys of Failure

I’ve been seriously rethinking my views on just what failure is and is not. I’m putting together a talk on the above subject and it’s made me think a lot about my life till now. I realize that I am now and continue to be an amazing failure!

I am a failure at being what other people think I should be.
I am a failure at thinking the way other people think I should think.
I am a failure at looking the way other people think I should look.
And I couldn’t be happier.

Not being what other people think I should be has given me the freedom to explore my life and my opportunitites in different, innovative ways.
Not thinking the way other people think I should think has given me the freedom to explore self-education, alternative education and to have my education actually serve my needs.
Not looking the way other people think I should look as given me permission to be a unique individual with my own style and my own likes and dislikes.

Most of the dictionaries and 99% of society think of failure as a bad thing. I don’t happen to share their opinion. How could you possibly succeed if you don’t know how to fail? How would you recognize success, then? Look at Thomas Edison - he failed 10,000 times to make a light bulb. When asked how he felt about so many failures, he said “I have not failed, I have simply found 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb.”.

Go try something you’ve never done before. Give yourself permission to fail. That way, you get a lot more joy when you succeed! After all, if you’ve never done it before, you have nothing to compare it to and you decide whether you’ve failed at all! Failure is all in YOUR mind. How many people do you know that blow off compliments saying that they could have done better and then list excuses? Especially when they’ve done something you are aching to just achieve a 10th of? It’s all relative and it’s all so very personal.

I give you permission (if you need it) to go try something new this next week. Something you’ve never done before and know nothing about. Go ahead, have fun.

Work well, play well, be well.

Musings on a Saturday Morning

As I sit getting ready for presenting my seminar, Watch Your Mouth, Your Subconscious Is Listening, it occurs to me just how much work this “not working” and a “little side job” is. Creating DeBorahBeatty.com is not in any way a side job, but still the feelings are the same. Between the normal demands on my time from friends and family, dumb stuff like chasing dustbunnies and washing dishes, creating art for sale and helping out at the local county fair, handing the business logistics for The Rainbow Factory and DreamSpace Arts, and then there’s still all the things I need to get done to pull this business together and grow it.

I find myself on my very own thrill ride, from my first step out of bed in the morning to finally stretching out at night. So many opportunities to use project management skills, time management, creative delegation, supply chain management, purchasing and materials allocation, doing the creative work for all the posters, booklets, and in-course materials. I’ve never had such fun.

I wanted to let you all know that there are amazing resources “out there” on the internet and on your bookshelves. My dear mentor, Daniel McBride always said, “To Succeed, You Must Read” and he was absolutely right. Millionaire Larry Winget says that over the years he’s read 4000 books. He’s written several as well. Have you heard the man speak? He’s very eloquent and knows his stuff! I found out about his actually by accident, flipping channels and found CNBC’s “Millionaire Inside” program. (http://www.cnbc.com/id/17912006/). It’s really an awesome site and you can go to the individual personalities’ sites to hear them recap their views. I’ve never stopped to count how many books I’ve read in the last 10 years alone, but I know my wishlist at Amazon is pretty impressive!

If you’re willing to do the work it takes to read everything out there on your specialty, you can definitely learn how to maximize your efforts. Daniel also taught me a great way to get through all those books which I’ll share with you another time.

I’m thinking of putting some of these tips and tricks into an eZine. What do you all think? You can sign up on my website under newsletters or send me an email.

Thanks to you all, keep on pushing and all my best in your efforts this week.

Work well, play well, be well
